IELTS Essay: Discuss Both Views “Global Climate Change”

Не все знают, что в эссе типа “Discuss both views” нужно обязательно критиковать/ослаблять позицию которую вы не поддерживаете. Расскажу сегодня как это сделать на примере эссе моего студента.

 (4 шага = Band Score 7.0)

Some people think that there are things individuals can do to help prevent global climate change. Others believe that action by individuals is useless and irrelevant and that it is only governments and large businesses which can make a difference. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Шаг первый: перефразируем задание + формулируем 1 аргумент за и 1 аргумент против во вступлении + выдвигаем наше мнение (какую сторону поддерживаем):

A matter of global ecological turnover has become a debatable point of view recently. It is sometimes argued that an individual can affect the global climate helping or harming our nature. However, there are those who strongly believe that this issue can be resolved only on the highest levels. This essay supports the former responsible point of view that every person can change the destiny of our planet preventing negative climate changes. Firstly, this essay will show the tremendous phenomenon when people gather against the hazard, and, secondly, it will show the historical negligent attitude of governments and large business towards our planet.

Шаг 2: поясняем преимущество индивидуальных усилий + пример для подкрепления вашей позиции

On the one hand, on no account should the importance of every person’s actions be neglected. Rarely do people realize the importance of small steps in starting the positive changes. If it were not for the responsible actions of some individuals in the 20^thcentury who, for instance, fought against freon gas, we would still observe a dangerous giant hole in the ozone layer. These individuals rose awareness among people who subsequently became a powerful lobby group of planet Earth.

Шаг 3: поясняем почему меры на государственном уровне необходимы + ослабляем этот аргумент предложением “However, it is clear that…”:

On the other hand, the effect of state ecological policies and laws for the biggest polluters cannot be underestimated. This is because of enormous fines and criminal liability large enterprises including state ones have implemented environmental standards in their activities. However, it is clear that these polluters have been forced to become ecologically aware under pressure of Good Samaritans who thought about the wellbeing of our descendants in the long run. For example, having conducted numerous demonstrations, ecologically aware citizens have forced officials to close dirty coal electricity plants in Great Britain.

Шаг 4: делаем вывод о преимуществе индивидуальных усилий (дублируем нашу позицию в заключении)

In conclusion, taking into account all stated above, I am firmly convinced that individuals independently can do much to prevent global climate change. This is due to the fact that showing deep concern, citizens can trigger environmental political processes. It is the high time people started thinking about ecology thus fighting for the future of planet Earth.
