In some countries, students live at home with their family while they study at university, whereas in other countries students study in universities in other cities. Do the benefits of living away from home while studying at university outweigh the disadvantages?

In my opinion, I think that independent living can bring about more benefits for teenagers’personal development compared to any problems of adaptation it might cause.

On the one hand, in many cases, attending higher education in another city is undeniably advantageous for a growing personality. One obvious positive aspect is fostering independence in terms of running a household and providing oneself with some basic necessities such as laundry and cooking meals. Not only are these skills an essential stage in the maturing process, but they are also the key to success in surviving in modern concrete jungles. Another undeniable merit of studying away is developing out-of-the box thinking due to being exposed to numerous everyday challenges, for example, filling documents or communicating with the landlord. Thus, if it were not for this experience, youngsters would be strictly limited to the older generation’s values and convictions, which are irrevocably tied to rigidity and narrow-mindedness.

Besides this, being unexperienced in real life, young people might be vulnerable to issues they are likely to encounter in a new place, for instance, fraud or other criminal activities. However, these obstacles are inevitable in adult life and overcoming them might even be beneficial in the long run.
